Episode 2 - What is Embryology? - featuring Emma Whitney
In this episode of The Male Fertility Podcast, Shaun and Ciaran are joined by Emma Whitney, the Director of Embryology and Genetics at The Evewell Clinic, to talk all about embryologists and the vital work they do.
Emma Whitney is the Director of embryology and genetics at The Evewell group in London. With over 20 years of practical IVF laboratory experience, Emma specialises in pre-implantation genetic testing of embryos with a passion to prevent the transmission of inherited genetic disease and enhancing the capabilities of embryo selection.
Emma’s commitment to genetics, coupled with her multitude of experiences - allows for a pragmatic and honest approach when discussing embryology.
Emma believes IVF patients should have the opportunity to understand what goes on in an IVF laboratory. Her goal is to help patients alleviate some of the stress and anxiety caused by so many unknowns.
“IVF is as much an emotional journey as it is a scientific one. I endeavour to protect the mental well-being of my patients through education and awareness. So no matter what science has to offer, every patient is in a better position to deal with the outcomes.”
What is an embryologist?:
Emma and the lads talk about Embryologists and the vital work they do. They handle everything from the moment that you hand over your gametes (sperm and eggs) to when you return to put them back. Emma talks about how it is all one team and is a lot of responsibility.
Behind the hatch:
Emma enlightens us about what happens behind the hatch, and the process that follows after you give a sperm sample. She explains what exactly it is that an Embryologist will be looking for in that sample.
Fertilising the embryo:
Emma shares the process of fertilisation of the embryo day by day. Shaun and Ciaran talk about what it was like receiving the phone call from their clinic about their embryo’s progression, and Emma tells them how she believes those calls should be handled.
